A Couple Questions

Postby Paradoxx » Sun Jan 03, 2010 9:14 am

Whats the best software to use for batch processing? People always asking me to email them photos and I find it a bit frustrating to go through all in PS to resize/compress. Is there anything that I can use to shrink filesize without much loss of image quality?

This RAW filetype that apparently everyone's camera take out. I guess thats the completely uncompressed picture rite? Does the XSi take them? Whats the benefit of taking RAW photos in comparison to JPEG?

Lens, Im currently using the stock 18-55mm lens that my Rebel came with. What do you think is the next best step for me, taking price into consideration? Im in no hurry to change bcuz I well, i can't :$ But I intend to do so maybe at the end of August when I learn more about my camera and get more experienced.

The canon software does batch process where you can resize and convert to jpeg all with a couple clicks of the mouse

Your XSi can shoot RAW. You just need to look through the menus and enable it. RAW is the uncompressed data straight off your camera sensor. No compression. The advantage is that you get the highest quality image possible out of your camera.

Ditto what Drag said. The 18-55 lens is THE worst lens in Canon's line-up. 50 f1.8 used is a great bargain.

I use Apple Aperture for RAW batch processing as I dislike Lightroom's interface and RAW converter output. Canon's DPP can batch process as stated earlier.

I use irfanview for batch processing of shots that go straight to facebook. Down dirty and cheap. It opens most file types, even raw once the codecs are installed.
Niver miss an opportunity to photograph a good sunrise. It might be the only thing to remind you that your day did not start out that bad.
